A practical checklist for short product demo videos (with or without AI)
Most early-stage SaaS products need a short demo video long before they can afford a production team. Here is a simple checklist for keeping these clips useful rather than decorative.
1. One outcome per video
Pick the single result a user gets, such as "send your first invoice" or "publish a landing page", and show only the steps that lead to it. Feature tours belong in docs, not in a 30-second clip.
2. Real UI for the product, generated visuals for the context
Screen recordings should show the actual interface. Where AI video generation helps is the context around it: the problem before the product (a cluttered inbox, a messy spreadsheet) and the outcome after. Keep the two visually distinct so nobody mistakes illustration for product footage.
3. Vertical and horizontal from the start
A landing page wants 16:9, social wants 9:16. Composing for both at the beginning is much easier than cropping later.
4. Captions on everything
Most viewers start muted. If the value proposition only lives in the voiceover, most people never hear it.
5. Test the first second
Make two or three openings for the same video and compare watch time. The rest of the clip can stay identical.
For the illustrative shots, tools like Nereo can generate short clips from a prompt or a still image, which is often enough for a pre-launch landing page. The checklist matters more than the tool, though: a clear outcome, honest product footage and captions will carry a simple video a long way.
